Playboi Carti's "Flex" is the saddest song in hip-hop

“Flex,” off of Playboi Carti’s 2017 debut self-titled album, is a by-product of his previous works, which traps the listener in a musical hallucination.

The Atlanta rapper repeats the same lines, but only changes a few words, emphasizing how people have gotten jealous now that he’s making a lot of money. Coming from a not-so-wealthy environment, Carti specifically calls someone out who, typically, would have a lot of money, saying: “I’m taking your sh--- you college kid!” He’s grateful for his wealth and lets it be known by showing it off or by “flexing.”

But then, the beat switches up, and Sir Cartier does it again -- brings his listeners into a musical hallucination; almost like a trance.

He transitions the song from flexing on everyone to showing a softer side where maybe money doesn’t matter: “I guess you not feeling me, not feeling my energy.” The beat gets to the point where it speaks for itself, and -- the bridge by Leven Kali -- shows maybe Carti isn’t happy with all this money; maybe money, drugs and flexing is all a coping mechanism.

Cash Carti made his first mark on the internet in 2015 when “Broke Boi” went viral and his unique Soundcloud sound -- composed of weird, eerie beats and simple lyrics -- enriched the rap game. Since then, he’s said less with his words and more with the overall production of the song because sometimes, not everything needs to be said. It can be felt.
